Journalists working in hostile environments, politicians under surveillance, dissidents and personnel working under cover ain’t using CalyxOS, Librem or Blackphone. This is the reality and doesn’t factor in ‘feelings’ or ‘gut instincts’ about Google products. Imagine being able to buy the cure for cancer from Walmart but refusing because Walmart also sells food products that can cause cancer.

Do you know why I dismiss them and why anyone else whose life literally depends on privacy and security also dismisses them? Just curious in what way you think this is? They've decentralised their network and server infrastructure, but it's still controlled by them. Most of their services are basically walled gardens.

Oh .. long story .. the entire premise of google is to break the most impenetrable forts of centralization - take for example - Internet Explorer with Chrome ( which btw is largely open source ) - iOS with Android ( again largely open) - Mac And Windows - chromeOS ( which is essentially Linux) - google FI to fight complete autonomy of AT&T and Verizon - wearOS to counter watchOS .. practically free for the partners like Android - wayMo to counter Tesla - TPUs to counter nVidia GPUs Google is makes centralized power into a binary choice and then opens up the floodgate for smaller players .. without google earth would be ..well still flat :-) Besides the entire AI is based on transformers which is open source of google .. Not even counting endless backend technologies.. like node ..

Unfortunately true. So waiting for Graphene to create their own OEM phone or use "Nophones" as often as possible. In the meanwhile it's still an upgrade for most people. Starting from acknwoledging that they want more control and privacy. That alone will translate into new market opportunities.

That doesn't really make it any better. You should never trust closed ecosystems where both the hardware and OS are provided by the same group. I would more quickly trust some cheap chinese android that nobody cares enough to plant hardware backdoors than using a device from a group that is knows they are sus since years and now I should trust they haven't poisoned their hardware too.

There are PLENTY of options which don't require Play Services. You're not a google crackhead, you don't NEED their alleged "convenience."

You can run sandboxed Google play on GrapheneOS and your apps should work.

All the banking apps (and I have a lot of them), Tesla app, and quite some more that either rely on Play Services, push notifications or check if they are really installed from Play Store.

I know, my comment was concerning the "de-googled". Of course a lot better than the stock #Android OS with all the #Google apps and services, but no way for me to go full de-googled without Play Services, unfortunately.

I know a bit about them and other companies with open-source hardware projects, but I confess I haven't delved too deeply into their proposal. I'd like to see them here at Nostr; I think it would be an excellent niche for them to explore 👍

The others ROMs are not as secure as GOS. You have to use a pixel, all other hardware is not up to snuff.... @GrapheneOS talk about all of this alot.

I'm not sure what u r talking about? That's the conclusion I have come to so far. From what I have read and while using GOS it seams to make the most sense. Im open to hearing what I may have missed?
