The United States issued a series of economic sanctions against Japan between 1938 and 1941, as a reaction to Japanβs expansion into East and Southeast Asia. A freeze of all Japanese assets in the United States was one of these sanctions. Although the intent was to gain a form of control over Japan without military conflict, this economic act was unsuccessful in preventing the outbreak of war in the Pacific.*
