I really enjoy going to places to get food I don’t know, have never heard of, and to point at things because I don’t speak any of the languages they do. It’s one of the greatest joys of my life. Being surprised. As someone who had ARFID growing up, this is a huge deal. It’s also a way for me to connect with other immigrants. As an autistic person, my special interest in cultural connection through food supersedes my need for familiarity, because that now brings me more comfort and joy. (Of course, I also have no food allergies or restrictions, so that makes this possible) I enjoy doing this so much and I hope I can keep doing it for the rest of my life. I’m happiest in places where I can do this regularly.
