I really enjoy going to places to get food I don’t know, have never heard of, and to point at things because I don’t speak any of the languages they do. It’s one of the greatest joys of my life. Being surprised.
As someone who had ARFID growing up, this is a huge deal. It’s also a way for me to connect with other immigrants. As an autistic person, my special interest in cultural connection through food supersedes my need for familiarity, because that now brings me more comfort and joy. (Of course, I also have no food allergies or restrictions, so that makes this possible)
I enjoy doing this so much and I hope I can keep doing it for the rest of my life. I’m happiest in places where I can do this regularly.

Elephant seals take short naps while on deep dives. On the way to 7000 ft below, they fall asleep while diving in spirals downwards. When they get there, they wake up and forage for food

This is Casper. He’s a famous cockatoo in Hayes Valley, San Francisco. There are murals of him.
When his owner is talking too much and he’s bored, he jumps around and says, ‘Hi, I’m Casper. I’m a good boi’

Strangers not only give me food randomly, they also tell me about food they like randomly. I was walking on the street and some guy told me ‘you should try the almond gold bar flavor at salt and straw it’s great’
i've been messaging with a friend of a friend from mexico city who is visiting singapore for the first time. and providing food recs of course. at every meal, he's like 'omg what'
giving people great food recs is the easiest way to bring happiness into the world. (i am also looking forward to being well fed when i finally make it to mexico)
I’m so bothered by all of the people who are supposedly on the ‘good’ side who use these things against their political opponents:
- making fun of people’s accents (make fuck, get green card is not funny even if you are mocking a horrible person)
- making fun of people’s weight
- making fun of people’s body parts and appendages
- using all kinds of ableist slurs and insinuations of mental health issues
- insinuating that people who think differently from you have ‘low IQ’ or developmental disabilities
Do better.
