Was thinking about this more: Personalized gifts are an option if you are less familiar with him or snagging him for a meal is tough: Home made cookies are always good(just a few, not a ton). You can also decorate them with messages or with things you know he likes. Personalizing it let's him know you were thinking of him specifically when you made them. A T-shirt with something he likes on it, or a mug. For most guys, utility is more important than how it looks, but if it matches him and does a job, its even more appreciated. The reason guys generally don't appreciate flowers is because they don't do anything productive... Keep it simple. When I was in school, girls used to give mix tapes to boys they liked... I'm not sure any of the boys in my grade understood that was why... The girls were sending subtle messages in their song choices and it went way over the boy's heads.
I don't think there is a male equivalent. I like to buy my own things so I wouldn't really trust anyone else to buy something for me other than something I have picked out. If anything, I appreciate it when my wife buys me some food. I seem to be always hungry, so it's nice when she takes time out of her busy schedule to bring me some food.
