#ETECSA, the only government-owned internet provider in #Cuba, announces that citizens will only be able to top up their accounts with 360 Cuban pesos every 30 days, which is equivalent to an internet package with 6 GB of internet, 60 minutes of regular calls, and 70 SMS messages. If you consume this you can recharge with another extra package rate that these are the prices 3GB of internet for 3360 Cuban pesos, 7GB of internet for 6720 Cuban pesos and 15 GB of internet for 11760 Cuban pesos or (here is the catch) 4GB of internet for 10 USD, 8 GB of internet with 75 min of regular call and 80 SMS for 20 USD, and finally 16 GB of internet for 35 USD… recharges in USD can only be made from abroad… to put it in context, the minimum wage in Cuba is 2100 Cuban pesos and the minimum pension is 1528 Cuban pesos… knowing this, if you consume your 6GB internet package and want to consume more you must pay 1.6 minimum wages or 2.2 minimum pensions just for 3GB more of internet… blessed Cuban socialism 🖕

Thats fucked up
The story continues: there were student protests, which were later overshadowed by protests fabricated by the government through its university arm, the FEU, a student group that defends the regime. After dialogue between the authorities and the FEU, it was agreed that they could add 2GB more internet for $1,200 CUP, practically the retirement of an old man again. In addition to the official declaration, the repressive forces and the police are pursuing the informal market for selling #ETECSA credit. Why ??? Each SIM card can be recharged with credit, and this credit is used to buy #ETECSA internet packages. With credit transfers, they broke the barrier of only 360 CUP for 30 days, and the informal market was taking foreign currency away from the monopoly. The solution is more repression… despite the fact that credit transfers are also super expensive, they are a better option than the one offered by the monopoly
