I sent 60,000 sats today as a test… Here’s what happened, what I learned, and what I want to test next: First off, I’m new to nostr, but things here excite me - I want to experiment, connect, and build. In the last 24 hours I sent: -199 zaps - 60,000 sats - Average of 301 sats per zap - Second most sats zapped on the day What happened: - Gained 87 new followers - Cost per follow 689 sats (~$0.65) - Super high signal followers (people building on Nostr, Founders, etc.) After doing a bit of research, it appears follower campaigns on X average around $1-2 per follow 🤷 I decided to mainly use “testing something…” as the text that goes along with the zap… not super direct, but was hoping that it was enough to peak curiosity… I almost decided to go with “quick question” which probably would have performed better, but also pissed more people off at the same time… That’s another thing I noticed, there is definitely a % of users who really hate all things related to this zap-vertising concept. My next test: Today I zapped 199 total zaps with an average of 301 sats per zap. Now, I want to try sending several thousand zaps, with an average sats per zap around 10 or so… We’ll see how it goes 🫡 image

At the same time you can probably get more followers here by just posting good content. Also don't overindex on the exact number of followers, different app will show a different number, since "followers" is a but fuzzy on nostr. It also matches real life where you can't really get the exact number of your friends...
part of the increase in followers was having a top post on primal trending. people were generally really curious about what your had to say and what you were doing. zapvertizing research is cutting edge. you got me thinking and acting on my first big day back on the platform in a bit. super cool to see and learn about your findings
If you wanted some follows, I’d would have started out just asking people to follow and asking for a repost before zapping. I don’t think you need to zap. Most everyone on here is happy to follow real people with something to share. Also value 4 value doesn’t need to be zaps. Post something interesting and you’ll pick up followers. Finally don’t rush it. Steady progress each day. Bonus thought: follow count is kind of a fiat concept. I’d would worry about the count as much as I’d worry about honest quality. But take all this for what you will, I’m not influencer. 🫡

The secret is engaging. We are a chronological timeline with real people who enjoy conversation. A community that thrives on hope and revolutionizing a free future. Consider Nostr a reset of an internet that was hijacked decades ago empowered by a borderless freedom money. Nostr + Bitcoin + Value 4 Value. One trap a newcomer always falls into when exploring Nostr is comparing one app to another. In this case, the lowest hanging fruit… Twitter (X). The interoperability aspect and ownership of an account is revolutionary. Would if that follow you purchased had no walls and had no expiration? Would if it went from YouTube to Instagram to Twitter to Facebook to Spotify and etc. A portable social graph. How would that compare?
I have a startup that uses ai to modernize learning resources and tinkering. Except often people get turned off by education and ai 😂 yet we need to address the stagnation in our country’s infrastructure! Nostr gives me hope that my crazy efforts may transfer some momentum in this fork in the road for our species. It’s definitely a vibe of making shit happen.

Being that Nostr is a forever protocol the time preference is low. Tools will be built to simplify the onboarding. It’s just a matter of staying the course in many respects. I for one feel weird putting an email in, allowing my data to be collected and all the baggage that comes with legacy social has worn a lot of people out. Nostr is a breath of fresh air but like you said, there is a learning curve. Hopefully we can nip that in the bud overtime.
To be upset that you are receiving money is wild behavior. Likely a reflexive response to traditional advertising where the ad is shoved into your entertainment and the user is expected to pay with their time. In this model you are paying the user to read your ad, fair deal in my book. Don't want the ad? Don't take the sats.

The paradigm shift in how advertising is done is happening in #Nostr 📢⚡
