I have a question for any medical professionals on Nostr. So, i just got back from the hospital. Second time in two weeks due to my mother's recent issues with dangerously high blood pressure readings: two weeks ago it had reached 220/104 and today my dad called 911 because it reached 196/96. The cardiologists that looked at her are currently prescribing her 50 mg of Losartan. 1 in the morning and 1 at night. Is there anything else, other than medications that you would recommend to keep her blood pressure within a healthy range. A particular diet, perhaps, or maybe certain vitamins? Hypertension is part of metabolic syndrome, largely driven by refined carbohydrates. So first step is to reduce carbohydrate intake, lose weight if overweight, get some exercise (walking 10 minutes after meals) and avoid added sugar. Eat less refined foods. Make sure she’s getting soluble and insoluble fiber. Read Lustig’s Metabolical for actionable advice on blood work and strategies to fight insulin resistance. In the meantime it is important to control excessive blood pressure. Especially if she’s symptomatic. Beware of some medications like ACE inhibitors which can cause a reversible but serious cough. Generally, calcium channel blockers, diuretics, ACE inhibitors and ARB (angiotensin receptor blockers) are the mainstays.
Essential hypertension is mostly due to insulin resistance. The current medical establishment dietary recommendation focuses on reduction in salt. This is important for a subset of patient. I think reduction in sugar and specifically fructose is more potent for blood pressure reduction. Broadly speaking (long term), lifestyle adjustments that lead to loss of adipose tissue (fat) and/or additional of muscle mass will help. Maintaining high protein intake is probably the most important dietary target for maintaining muscle mass. Beyond that whatever strategy leads to a calorie deficit will help. I don’t like the advice to eat less and move more because I don’t think that we exercise conscious control over these variables, like we think. When one strategy fails, add one or try something different. Whatever dietary adjustments are helpful for achieving calorie reduction is highly individual. A reduction in refined carbohydrate intake works for many (there’s little to no nutritional value in these foods). For individuals who don’t look particularly overweight, but who have increased fat tissue between the organs in the abdomen (visceral fat) increasing muscle mass through resistance training is really helpful (for those that can achieve it). Cate Shannahan makes a compelling case for cutting out seed oils. Her book Dark Calories and Deep nutrition got me to stop eating chips and french fries. These seed oils hidden in all processed foods lead to metabolic changes that shift toward increased adipose tissue. Increase fiber intake (from real foods) and/or protein to fill the gap. She may need to focus on eating high protein, whole vegetables and still need to count calories to achieve a calorie deficit. She may find a ketogenic diet sustainable and still need to count calories to achieve a calorie deficit.
The Bitcoiner doctors I'm aware of seem to be more on Twitter still; Dr. Ahmad Ammous and Dr. Jack Kruse. Kruse was a neurosurgeon so this is probably out of his element, though I do somewhat expect the light therapy side of things does still have an impact. I know Dr. Ammous, like his brother Saifedean, is big on carnivore but not sure that'd be his first step coming from a crisis level. He does tend to STRONGLY warn against things like statins, so may be more useful there finding alternatives to the poisons most doctors would be considering. I of course am not a doctor. But do swear by the power of walking regularly. Doesn't need to be far, or vigorous. But it's not gonna drop anything rapidly either. In general diet advice I've seen suggests anything that will increase Nitric Oxide (NO) in the blood. There are some supplements but making suggestions seems irresonsible at this point -- better to consult someone qualified who can consider interactions.
Forgot to add a few more details. She's had a sharp pain in the left side of her chest for the past two weeks which, obviously, becomes worse when her BP spikes. She is a senior citizen. And we had her tested for any irregularities with her kidneys and lungs and for a UTI. Nothing out of the ordinary, or so the doctors said. No one can seem to figure out why this chest pain won't go away.
doctors also never really explain what they check on. could be, that they checked it but didn't tell you because its too complicated for normal people. If you really can say its no dangerous problem, (kidney, heart) then you can start with natural support. Lifestyle changes are probably always good. arteriosclerosis is very common for older people (which also leads to angina pectoris, always depending on where the vessels are damaged) and damaged vessels cannot simply heal, unfortunately. in this case, they would put stents into the vessel. there are many different reasons for high blood pressure. If there is a way, let them write everything down about what they tested and differentiated. get a copy of all the blood tests and stuff. a good anamnesis is golden and helps with second/third,... opinions. πŸ’š
They don't. But, they ignored most of my questions and just gave her those pills. I take that as a sign that they just don't care enough to find out or know that they're incapable of doing so. I'm actually in the hospital lobby right now waiting to get a copy of all the blood test results she's had done, so I can show them to the cardiologist on Thursday.
Pills rarely, if ever, attack the root of the problem. Fortunately, you can never go wrong with lifestyle changes, especially while the docs are looking for a diagnosis. I don't know the full details, but I agree with one of the comments here about angina pectoris, it's one of the things I'd try to rule out. Independent of the diagnosis, I'd recommend transitioning as close as possible to a carnivore/ketovore diet + adequate sunlight exposure (especially during the first hour or two after sunrise) + avoiding toxic blue light from screens and LED/fluorescent light bulbs once the sun goes down + grounding in nature. Avoid wearing sunscreen or utilizing sunglasses. Obviously this isn't getting deep into the details and can seem weird if your unfamiliar with decentralized medicine,, but you basically want to increase mitochondrial and, therefore, general health with these interventions. I always address a spiritual path. Not trying to solve it entirely matter to matter, like rowing in butter as the allopathic services do. But instead trying to access the software code in spirit allowing this to happen to her. It's not hard but it requires a tiny bit of faith and discipline.
