Semi-periodic reminder that the DM feature here is utterly broken and should not be regarded as "private" in any meaningful sense. And its semantics seem designed to violate the principle of least surprise.
Example: ANYONE mentioned in a message, not just tagged at the start, is a recipient. So if you send someone a DM that says "That @npub178rv...qekt guy is an ignorant moron", I get a copy.
I was reminded of this behavior just now.

@npub178rv...qekt totally agree that DMs here must never be considered private in any way.
That said⦠you would think it would be logical for people that if you mention an account, it is likely to be included!
@npub178rv...qekt @npub1uyxy...dmcm All this because the various ActivityPub frontend UI implementations refuse to reify a "To:" field for posts to make such things are explicit and controllable.
This is the same issue with polluting posts with hashtags while ActivitySteam Note objects have a dedicated field for tags that wouldn't need to spam the message body to use. There could be a separate entry field, instead of extracting from inline signaling.
Effectively, attempting to be clever and simplify the UI instead just led to functional degradation.
@npub178rv...qekt
That's why it is called "mentions only" and not DMs or Private Messages, though.
