If Bitcoin competes with Visa, MasterCard, and other transaction rails that the dollar relies on, it will eventually replace the underlying unit in those transactions as well.

Eventually. But does it have to? I don't need to shave off a slice of gold at Starbucks... I have mixed feelings about it. In nations without the infrastructure of the U.S. bitcoin will 100% replace the dollar (or local currency).

I’d say for some time rather than a long time. Money converges to one. Once people realize that they can trade the underlying as easily as the dollar, it will happen naturally.
That’s also my base case for the next 1-2 decades.
