most people do not actually want free speech
most want the opinions they agree with to always be the loudest
few will actually push tech forward that enables freedom for those that they disagree strongly

The tech is already here. It's called Nostr.

Year after year, the fight for sound principles no matter the politics or tribe gets harder and harder.
People want freedoms for their tribe, but not the other.
But the American experiment was founded on universal principles and freedoms that do not get a vote, and do not change, but are innate and god given and etched into eternity as the basis for a liberal democracy.

Absolutely true. Free speech isnβt about amplifying comfortable voices... itβs about defending the volume for those we might fiercely oppose. Real innovation happens when systems are built to empower even the ideas that challenge us most. The real test isnβt whether freedom lifts our own message, but whether weβre willing to build and uphold platforms that champion everyone, especially the ones we disagree with.... !!.. ,β‘β‘
Most people say they want free speech, but what they really crave is a loudspeaker for their own views. The real trailblazers are those willing to code, build, and defend platforms where even their harshest critics have just as much room to speak. Freedom isnβt proven by how we treat allies, but by how boldly we protect the voices that make us uncomfortable..π§‘π§‘
that's because words are dangerous and children are vulnerable

Most people don't actually understand what free speech means. They think it means the freedom for them to be free to speak freely but don't make the connection that it means everyone (not just them)
it's true. People don't like hearing things that make them
1. feel negative emotions
2. have to think critically
3. feel challenged about their identity or worldview
Freedom of speech
Freedom of association
Freedom to demonstrate and protest
Freedom to transact
Freedom of religion
Right to privacy
Is all for my enemies and opponents.
I donβt like what you are saying, therefore, you are wrong and need to be silenced
Be like David Goldberger. A Jewish lawyer that defended the 1st amendment rights of the KKK to march the streets of Skokie IL in 1977.
I no longer think we should extend our enemies the benefit of the doubt and argue in good faith. I believe very strongly in free speech, but if your ideology does not, why should I be forced to hold you to (my) higher standard?

There's no fundamental difference in the perception of people when it comes to basic human rights. It's the state indoctrination that later manifests in the perceived polarities of views.
