yeah, i'm with grug and the jedi on this one also.
this is why it's the only move for someone with their eyes open at the moment. AI and internet are creating a situation where there is no economic viability in large cities, because they are obsolete. nobody needs to live in the inner city anymore to avoid commutes. most towns over about 2000 population have 100mbit+ optic fibre internet, and for those that aren't, there is starlink.
if the trajectory of large settlements right now is collapse, then the only safe place to be is in the ~50km+ range of large cities. where people already are more self reliant due to necessity. like i see around me here in northeastern croatia, with EU sanctions now, the price of butane/propane gas is now way higher per BTU than firewood. the majority of occupied houses in this village are running on wood heating. a few are running on gas or electric powered recirculating hot water radiators. 60 euros worth of LNG is only good to heat one room for 7-10 days depending on how low outside temps get. 6-8 euros a day just to not freeze.
so, even here, 40km from the nearest city, i still feel like i'm not yet in the right place. gotta stack, so i can move further away. north. higher altitude. lower populatiton.
also, zoning regulations will stop anyone repurposing non-residential zoned buildings. the towers will continue to empty out, the inner city commercial districts are going to empty out as businesses don't have enough customers anymore, and the smart people are already living in villages and homesteading.
