#WritersCoffeeClub Dec 23: What's a facet of the modern era of writing for which you're thankful?
Everyone else is yelling about word processors or electricity, but what *I'm* grateful for is mass literacy. It's only really been a thing since the 17th century at the earliest (and more realistically the late 19th century), it's a fragile, tenuous thing, and without it the modern era of writing couldn't exist.
The most interesting aspect of this is that we now have *TWO* insurgent fourth parties (counting the Liberal Democrats as the traditional third party). There's a *huge* protest vote out there, and it looks to me as if Reform only picked it up because there was no viable left-wing party. (The LibDems might have been a contender if they hadn't gone into coalition with (ack, spit) David Cameron in 2010, painting them into a centre-right corner.)

#WritersCoffeeClub 19 Dec. If you were to teach a writing course, what would be the most important lesson?
That the text on the screen or paper in front of you is no longer a part of your mind: it's dead words, and editors and readers can dissect them without hurting you. (Yes, it came out of your mind, but it's not *you* and you will never be able to improve as a writer if you can't distance your ego from your work.)
