People -- such as USG decision makers -- don't seem to understand what these crappy LLM tools do. They don't know anything. They don't think. They're not smart. They don't reason. They just replicate patterns with whatever's in their training set. They'll plug bits and pieces of that together and might spit out something true, or might spit out something that's complete bullshit but fits a trained pattern. Someone has to get this through the brains of people in govt who spend money on this snake oil and use it to make very consequential decisions affecting people's lives.

I think a lot about growing up in the 60s-70s in houses that had no AC and summers weren't bad in the Midwest. And I also think a lot about how over the years at the homestead in CO from the mid-90s to 2020 it went from being a green beautiful property full of plants to a dry, crispy dead place. And now I'm in AL in a level 3 "major" heat risk due partially to "corn sweat"!? Climate change is real, it's bad, and it's happening fast.

I was looking through the latest product recalls yesterday...as one does...and it was really striking how many of the recalled products have gibberish brand names made up by those Chinese Amazon vendors that flood the site.

The politicians who visited the FL immigrant concentration camp and then made a big deal about the design of the integrated sink/toilets have apparently never been to a jail or prison where these are common. Standard piece of equipment available from many suppliers, designed to prevent vandalism and self harm. Is it gross to have your sink over your toilet? Yes it is. But this isn't a new thing. The problem is that we have concentration camps, we are providing no due process of law, we have a private prison industry capable of building a concentration camp in the middle of nowhere in a week, and the likelihood that many politicians are invested in these companies and benefit from their lobbying and donations. A man was robbed and beat up after being pulled over by two guys impersonating #ICE in Delaware. They had red and white lights flashing on their car. I can't find the story without a paywall. But I can say this has been going on since JANUARY, as this news article from Feb 5 lays out.
