You can’t fix a broken heart with core exercises. I was at a wedding this weekend, talking with a relative in her 80s (once vibrant and active... always playing tennis or sailing) who hasn’t been able to walk well since a fall last year (but no physical injuries). Me: “How did you fall? Were you feeling dizzy? Did you slip on ice? Any medications you might be taking? Her: “No.” Me: "Well what was the root cause?" Her: Smiled and shrugged …no answer. Me: "I think you fell because your alignment is off. Your upper body is hunched, shoulders wrapped forward…it looks like you’re protecting your heart.” Her: I’ve been doing lots of PT exercises for the past six months to strengthen my “core” and legs. Me: Try this exercise: roll your shoulders up, then back and down. Lift your heart and draw your shoulder blades down your back….like this (I demonstrated) She followed my lead and as she moved a smile appeared on her face… like a weight had been lifted. If she were my client, we would prioritize the heart center, utilizing yoga poses and pranayama. The body will fall into alignment, once the emotional holding is released. While the PT focused on her core, it missed her real injury, a broken heart. Her husband, tennis partner, and soulmate had passed a few years ago. Her posture said everything to anyone who took the time to notice. This is the difference between Ayurveda and other medical modalities (i.e., naturopathic, allopathic, homeopathic…)….all the scientific tests in the world will not be able to diagnose a broken heart. Ayurveda looks at the whole person (physical, emotional, and spiritual) when diagnosing. This holistic approach helps identify the root cause of imbalance, so treatment can actually heal, not just manage symptoms.
