you know what I want to be able to do with ZeroTier (or really any system like it that operates at layer 2)?
have a system on network A act as a host such that a system on network B (which might be mobile and move to network C or D at any time) can have a layer 2 interface connected to network A.
#ZeroTier currently gives the machines on network A and network B (or C or D) interfaces on virtual network Z by which they can talk to each other regardless of location. very useful, but not the same thing.

#Surfhosting is #selfhosting while #couchsurfing. This is an infrastructure HOWTO project for #nomadic developers and power users.
Documentation is written with cyberpunks, cyberserfs, and frugality in mind. Special attention will be paid to portability and usability on untrusted networks.
The Surfhosting.cc website is back under construction as of mid-2025. Soon!!!

Firefox is becoming an AI browser and the internet is not at all happy about it
There's no such thing as bad publicity, they say. Mozilla must be clinging to that aphorism for dear life right now, what with the internet meltdown that met its announcement that Firefox is to become an AI browser over the next three years.
This Reddit thread has 2,300 comments and counting, few of them complimentary. "Firefox was in prime position to become the anti-AI browser which is something there's real demand for. But no, let's chase trends instead," is one post that pretty much sums up the sentiment.
Over on X, it's a similar story, with one user commenting (via Windows Central), "I've never seen a company so astoundingly out of touch with the people who want to use its software."

I'm in a mood today to mute some more accounts with professional headshots & mortgages
looks like Delta Chat multiple relay capability is rolling out, but based on what I've read so far I will be waiting a couple more point releases to set it up.
coincidentally, the default server for new accounts had a disk failure the other day.
had to replace the CMOS battery on that machine and deal with a number of annoyances but now it's ready for me to start Proxmox networking setup and deploying VMs/containers
I am looking for a m.2 2230 A/E key to SATA connector adapter card like the one pictured on the right, where the SATA connector lies flat, parallel to the plane of the card itself, and the cable comes away from the card to the top (end opposite the m.2 connector) or bottom (end with the m.2 connector).
I doubt such an item exists, but if you know of one, please let me know. boosts appreciated!

the main thing my recent investigations into decentralized E2EE chat have taught me is that it is *extremely difficult* to build such a system and have it be highly usable.
every contender I've tried fails in some respects. so far my personal opinion is that Delta Chat is the most likely to develop into something I would consider 'production ready.'
for this reason, I will be paying the most attention to Delta Chat going forward, until I do another round of testing sometime in the future.
FOSS drama: F-Droid, Abrahamic religions, and censorship
I posted a couple hours ago that I'm a lot less impressed with how F-Droid is being run than I was a week ago.
in part that's due to the response to what's going on with Syncthing, and in part it's due to a controversy from a couple months ago which I became aware of today.
tl;dr: F-Droid contributors decided to put a "NSFW" anti-feature flag on apps which contain religious texts including the Bible and the Quran. this had the effect of hiding such apps from search results by default and labeling them as promoting violence, pornography, or similar.
as you can imagine, it didn't go over well.
then, some F-Droid contributors responded in a manner which came across as dismissive and flippant in Gitlab issues and a forum thread.
it's worth noting that #FDroid has received taxpayer dollars on prior occasions.
the kickoff:
GitLab
Mark Bible apps as NSFW (!27861) ยท Merge requests ยท F-Droid / Data ยท GitLab
For app update please choose the App update template. For App inclusion please choose the App inclusion template. Thanks for your contribution!
here is how to pause updates of Syncthing-Fork from F-Droid until the situation becomes clearer
based on code reviews done by people in the Syncthing forum, any version up to the one currently available on F-Droid is probably fine. however, nobody really knows the person in control of the repo, so you probably want to disable updates for now.
to do that:
1. open the Syncthing-Fork listing in F-Droid
2. open the menu in the upper right
3. make sure "ignore all updates" is checked
posting this separately because the thread I started about it yesterday is becoming a hellthread
