You can’t spend years arguing that America is an irredeemable, colonial crime with no moral right to exist, then pivot at the 250th anniversary and try to out-patriot everyone. You can criticize a country, but you can’t declare it illegitimate and then suddenly claim ownership of it. image
There’s a real contradiction coming into view. You can criticize America harshly, even indict its history. But you can’t spend years calling it an irredeemable, colonial project born only of slavery and genocide, then suddenly pivot at the 250th anniversary and claim you’re the true patriots. Patriotism implies continuity and care. Irredeemable things don’t get celebrated. image
In the U.S., patriotism isn’t a civic philosophy. It’s pageantry. Flags, anthems, slogans, costumes. People don’t react to your beliefs so much as whether they think you’re sincere or performing. The posture matters more than the content. image
