Deeply disappointing but unsurprising that the EBU has failed to ban Israel from Eurovision. And props to AVROTROS (Dutch broadcaster) for immediately pulling out. Germany and Austria being completely unwilling and utterly incapable of actual self reflection on their own history beyond a knee-jerk "we can't say anything about anything related to Jews" is a pathetic failure of their collective memory policy over the past 80 years. It's so much easier to make noise about being nice to "Jews" than to actually confront what Nazism was/is about. #eurovision
I have arrived at the Estadi Olimpic for the game between Catalonia and Palestine! Despite being an hour early there is already a crowd forming. Palestinian and Catalan flags a plenty 🇵🇸 :flag_catalonia: and a friendly upbeat atmosphere all around. #Palestine #catalunya #football image
I'm super hyped for this football match tomorrow between the Catalan :flag_catalonia: and Palestinian 🇵🇸 national teams. This is the intersection of sports and politics that I love. As an added bonus two players from CE Europa (my neighborhood team) were selected to play for the Catalan side! From the organizers: “On November 18, at 6:30 p.m., the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium will host a historic match: the Catalonia National Team will face the Palestine National Team. But this will not be just a football match — it will be an unprecedented act of struggle, solidarity, and community building. In July 1936, Barcelona and this same stadium were set to host the People’s Olympiad, an internationalist and antifascist initiative that sought to stand up to the Berlin Olympic Games organized by the Nazi regime. That spirit of resistance and fraternity will return to Montjuïc on November 18. All proceeds from the match and the ACT X PALESTINE campaign will go directly to supporting the needs of the Palestinian people through three lines of action: humanitarian aid and reconstruction in Gaza, justice and an end to impunity, and culture as a form of resistance. Let’s fill the Stadium with solidarity, dignity, and commitment to Palestine.” #Palestine #football #catalunya image
The protests worked. I don't know what will happen with Gaza. I wouldn't be surprised if Bibi et al. grab the first flimsy excuse to continue where they left off. But, in the mean time, there are people who have been able to go home, some (how much remains a bit unclear) aid has made it in, and folks are able to catch their breath, if only for a moment. It's not nothing. It's also not Trump’s genius or Bibi’s kindness or anything like that. [1/4] #gaza
