Currently spinning Dead Sara’s self-titled debut before it goes into my signed vinyl box. In case you didn’t know, Emily Armstrong, the lead singer on this 2012 album that still rocks real hard, is now the lead singer for Linkin Park.

Currently spinning Lamont Dozier’s Black Bach. If you don’t know who Lamont Dozier is, then you don’t know anything about Motown. Even though I find the title a little egotistical, it’s hard to argue with a man who helped define an entire era of music.

Currently spinning Krokus’ The Blitz. The best part of digging through the dollar bin at an antique shop is finding a band you’ve never heard of and learning something new. Krokus is a Swiss rock band that built a following in the early 80s. This album was critically panned, but honestly, it isn’t that bad. They definitely give off an AC/DC-lite vibe in places. Revolutionary? No. Fun? There are some fun cuts on here.

I don’t buy many 45s, but when Olivia Dean put out a live version of “Man I Need”, I couldn’t help it. She really caught my ear this year. Hoping I get to catch her live next year and photograph one of her shows.

Currently spinning Wild Cherry’s Only the Wild Survive. The only song I ever really knew was “Play That Funky Music,” so when I spotted this in the dollar bin, I picked it up to hear why they never moved beyond one-hit-wonder status. This was their fourth and final studio album, and it sounds like a band searching for their next sound and next big hit. The musicianship is solid, but there’s a sense of uncertainty running through it. It is a promo copy though, so I may just hang onto it.

Currently spinning Bill Evans’ Portraits at the Penthouse. This was a recent Record Store Day pickup and my first Bill Evans album. I knew he played keys on Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, but after reading the liner notes and revisiting his history, I realized he did far more for jazz piano than I expected. Really glad I picked this one up.

Currently spinning Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam, Footsteps in the Dark: Greatest Hits Vol. 2. I bought this LP for a dollar even though it was warped because it still looked clean. It plays clean, so this was a dollar well spent.

Now spinning Cheryl Lynn’s Instant Love. Produced by Luther Vandross, this 1982 album is actually quite good. While her mainstream pop success waned in the late 1980s, her early hits remain popular, frequently sampled, and clearly influential. The duet with Luther here is a real pleasure to listen to.

Currently spinning Paul Simon’s Hearts and Bones. It’s hard to believe this album was a commercial flop relative to his other releases. Rolling Stone once concluded that the record is all about heart versus mind, thinking versus feeling, and how those tensions get in the way of making music or love. I completely agree. The songwriting here feels quietly profound and deeply human.

Currently spinning Eric Clapton’s Just One Night. Love him or hate him, he still recorded some great music. They always say his recorded live performances never fully captured what people saw in person, but I think this one does a pretty good job.
