If the Trump administration wants to hold all Afghan immigrants responsible for one gunman, or all Somali immigrants responsible for some one pulling a scam, then I’m good with that. Deport all white christian immigrants and their descendants for school shootings, for the murder of Heather Heyer, for almost all the death by cops, indeed for most of the crime in America.
When I point out that Trump consistently uses the language of genocide, it isn’t that I’m surprised about it. It is that it needs to be consistently pointed out, and not normalised. It should shock our conscience and keep on shocking our conscience. That doesn’t mean we’re surprised. It means we’re not desensitised to it. Historically, people in power who call groups of people ‘garbage’ or ‘vermin’ or other dehumanising pejoratives, usually do this just before they commit atrocities.
"Those in power want you to de-value others so you will accept atrocities.” This is a profoundly true statement. And it is important to remember it every time you think perhaps you are over-reacting to witnessing the cruelty and the disdain inflicted on others. Do not accept the invitation to be a “pragmatist". It’s a way of grooming you to accept the misery of others.
