Happy Birthday to Mary Somerville (26 Dec 1780 – 29 Nov 1872), the brilliant Scottish scientist, writer, mathematician and science writer. The word scientist was coined for her. In an era filled with great men of science but few women, she pioneered the art of presenting science in words that were engaging and accessible to a wide audience. She predicted the presence of Neptune based on the perturbations of the orbit of Uranus. 1/n image
Researchers, using the JWST, have confirmed that a black hole, first detected in 2023 by the same team, is indeed a supersonic Runaway Supermassive Black Hole, racing away from its host galaxy at 3.43 million km/h. RBH-1 contains ~20 million solar masses and has left behind a 200,000-light-year-long "contrail" of newborn stars, twice the diameter of our Milky Way galaxy, as it plows ahead into the circumgalactic medium (CGM). https://arxiv.org/pdf/2512.04166 1/n image
An insightful read - Q: Why are political leaders pushing anti-science rhetoric and easily disprovable lies? A: This isn’t about ignorance of science. It’s about power. If you can convince a large segment of the population that experts cannot be trusted, institutions are corrupt, objective truth doesn’t exist, and loyalty matters more than evidence, then power no longer depends on performance or results. It depends on identity and obedience. #UsPol 1/n
