Modern technology has degraded to the point where I can't trust my basic digital kitchen scale anymore. I know I need 200g of oats for 5 portions of overnights and by now I have a good feel for the right amount and it did work out exactly like that. But the scale reported it as 150g, clearly wrong. I'm now seriously considering looking for an old analogue scale, which would be far bulkier and much less convenient, but at least it would work.
Set up your SSH (keys, usernames, ports) so that you can go to every host you need to with just `ssh <hostname>`. It’s so nice. Too long have I bothered with typing out “ssh -p 9999 whoever@whatever.com” constantly.
Last week in a seminar we discussed a text that was largely about sexual violence, including mass rape during war. Heavy stuff. One student admitted they had not read the text but worked off a ChatGPT summary. They had no idea the text was about sexual violence. ChatGPT withheld that information. This wasn’t just a minor error nor a typical LLM hallucination. About a third of the text, arguably its most important part, went completely ignored because it didn’t match OpenAI’s content policies
