This is GNM-3, but its friends just call it Gnomie. It lives in your computer and tends to your apps. It keeps your windows tidy and updates your Flatpaks while you’re not looking. Don’t switch workspaces too fast or you’ll make it dizzy. #GNOME #whyHaveAMascotWhenWeAlreadyHaveAPerfectlyGoodFoot image
Microsoft’s internal effort to replace humans with LLMs is showing. The quality of GitHub’s web interface started to decline rapidly in the past 2-3 months: they have been failing to remove inhibition correctly, uploading attachments is broken 80% of the time, when it does work it incorrectly shows supported file formats, and now it just told me to press the Windows key on my phone… Do I know for a fact that these regressions are caused by LLMs? No, but I would be surprised if they weren’t.
Out of curiosity, I had asked GitHub Copilot to create an issue for me in one of my own repos and it didn’t even do the basic task of checking for duplicates. There were at least 5. I’ve been holding off on moving everything to @npub1fh73...ee83 because of CI and because “everyone has a GitHub account” but directly enabling AI generated spam is the final straw. I will start migration of what I can on the weekend and I encourage everyone to join me in using a non-corporate forge.
Increasing minimum hardware requirements, especially when it comes to memory and storage are a chicken and an egg problem. The less optimized apps get, the higher specs you need to run them, not because they actually need them, but because the half an hour developers would invest into optimizing their assets becomes less and less valuable… It’s sad and I wish we could somehow incentivize lower minimum requirements beyond what is done now. Half-a-gig download size apps are ridiculous.
