Bad news from the West Bank... ---------------------------------------------------- 🔴 URGENT | Israeli Forces Attack UAWC’s Seed Bank Multiplication Unit in Hebron Just moments ago, Israeli occupation forces launched a military assault on the Multiplication Unit of UAWC Seed Bank in the Hebron area, using bulldozers and heavy machinery to demolish storage facilities and infrastructure essential to the unit’s operations. The attack resulted in the destruction of critical facilities used for storing agricultural materials and inputs, constituting a direct assault on Palestinian food sovereignty, efforts to preserve heirloom seeds, and a continued targeting of the Union itself. We call on all allies, friends, and international partners to urgently act to stop these violations and hold the Israeli occupation accountable for its crimes against land, people, and seeds. We further urge increased solidarity and support for Palestinian farmers and their right to remain on their land. The panel will focus on general-purpose AI (GPAI) models and systems, advising the EU AI Office and national authorities on systemic risks, model classification, evaluation methodologies, and cross-border market surveillance. It will also alert the AI Office of emerging risks. The Commission looking for 60 members for a renewable 24-month term. Candidates should have expertise in GPAI models and systems, AI impacts, or related fields, such as model evaluation, risk assessment and mitigations, cybersecurity, emerging systemic risks, and compute measurements and thresholds. Experts must have a PhD or equivalent experience and remain independent of any AI provider. The selection process will ensure gender balance and representation across EU Member States and EEA/EFTA countries. While *EU citizenship is not a requirement*, 80% of the experts must be from the EU or EFTA Member States. Applications are open until 14 September.

Dear scientists, especially the R-community: The NZ government wants to scrap all soc social sciences and humanities. 🤯 I probably don't have to explain why this is a totally bonkers milei-ish idea. (maybe just add the detail that Māori researchers will be overproportionally affected by these budget cuts, but this is probably anyway a feature of the plan) I address the #RStats community explicitely, since R was developed in Aotearoa.
