ICE said it found no records in response to our FOIA for body-worn camera footage from Operation Midway Blitz. We’re pursuing our options to get to the bottom of it — and send ICE a clear message: It's not the secret police or exempt from accountability. image
We wrote for Jacobin about our recent panel with three U.S. journalists who were aboard the Gaza aid flotillas. They described facing assaults and threats from Israeli soldiers — and said the U.S. government did little to help.
Journalists should never be arrested for doing their jobs. Prosecutors in Miami-Dade County must immediately drop the charges against photojournalist Dave Decker, and police should apologize for arresting him for doing nothing more than working to keep the public informed.
DHS is abusing its authority to shut down ICE-watching accounts. Reporting on public ICE activity is protected by the First Amendment. It’s also something journalists do routinely. Senator Wyden is right to call out this attack on the First Amendment.
“It looks like these officers believe transparency itself is obstructive to their operations, which is a pretty good indicator that their operations are in need of obstruction … The First Amendment is intended to obstruct government abuses.”
