Reports indicate an imminent counterterrorism operation targeting Islamic State–affiliated sites in the Homs Governorate. In addition to ground movements, heavy activity by fighter jets and other military aircraft has been reported over Palmyra.
Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shaibani strongly condemned the terrorist attack on a joint Syrian–U.S. patrol near Palmyra, carried out as part of counterterrorism operations. He offered condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the American people and the U.S. government, and wished a swift recovery to those injured. image

According to sources within Syria’s Interior Ministry, the ISIS-linked attacker who ambushed U.S. and Syrian forces today in Palmyra was a member of the Syrian Security Forces from Aleppo. He had recently been placed under investigation and was set to be dismissed after authorities discovered he held extremist views, including sympathies toward the Islamic State. The attacker opened fire on soldiers and other members of both delegations as they stood outside their vehicles after exiting the Desert Security Headquarters. He was swiftly killed by Syrian security forces following the attack. image

Hours after a phone call on Friday between Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russian forces launched a large-scale ballistic missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s Odesa Oblast. The strikes hit two ports and damaged at least three commercial vessels, all owned by Turkish-based companies. One of the ships, the Panamanian-flagged and Turkish-owned CENK T roll-on/roll-off passenger ferry, was struck by at least one drone, sparking a major fire that caused extensive damage, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.
