Perhaps, having lived in a developing country, I have some insight into how one constructs one’s work and life in anticipation of infrastructure failure. Looking at what climate change is doing to the weather, and what bat-shit crazy leaders are doing to their nations, here’s my advice: assume everything can fail. Decide what failures might endanger your life, your work, your well-being, your comfort - in that order. Address the first one first, then work down the list.
Today I am putting the finishing touches on a soft, warm #Hanten. Hand sewing down the collar. My neighbour, Ana, two doors down, is of a venerable age. I saw her looking pretty frail the other day. She was complaining about being cold in her house, but that spending all day in her fuzzy bathrobe didn’t seem dignified. So I decided to make her something to keep her warm. #sewing image
RE: There is only one reason why both Russia and the US under Trump are chomping at the bit to break the EU apart and that is because, together, we are a significant threat to their corrupt version of a world order. Parties in Europe clamouring to help Russia and the US succeed are, quite frankly, traitors to their own states. Whether they’re doing it for ideological or financial reasons (probably for both), they are knowingly placing their own citizens in a position of subordination. View quoted note →
I watched the entirety of the series Chernobyl again while doing some hand sewing. It’s so well acted, so well written, the cinematography is subtle but incredible, even the sound design is outstanding. And a timely quote: "Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth. Sooner or later that debt must be paid. "
If the Trump administration wants to hold all Afghan immigrants responsible for one gunman, or all Somali immigrants responsible for some one pulling a scam, then I’m good with that. Deport all white christian immigrants and their descendants for school shootings, for the murder of Heather Heyer, for almost all the death by cops, indeed for most of the crime in America.
When I point out that Trump consistently uses the language of genocide, it isn’t that I’m surprised about it. It is that it needs to be consistently pointed out, and not normalised. It should shock our conscience and keep on shocking our conscience. That doesn’t mean we’re surprised. It means we’re not desensitised to it. Historically, people in power who call groups of people ‘garbage’ or ‘vermin’ or other dehumanising pejoratives, usually do this just before they commit atrocities.
"Those in power want you to de-value others so you will accept atrocities.” This is a profoundly true statement. And it is important to remember it every time you think perhaps you are over-reacting to witnessing the cruelty and the disdain inflicted on others. Do not accept the invitation to be a “pragmatist". It’s a way of grooming you to accept the misery of others.
