We made the difficult decision to sell off our cattle breeding herd this winter. Time will tell if it was a good decision, but looking around at the state of things it seems to our benefit to take the next steps towards self sufficiency and in source more of our homestead activity. Spending several thousands of dollars every winter on hay wasn't getting us anywhere and our end goal, which may or may not be attainable, is complete self reliance with food production. For livestock, this means significantly under stocking our resource base and focusing on our needs. Next week's video will bring more clarity for our future plans.
Winter is a good time to clean out and defrost your deep freezers. You have the benefit of cold temperatures outside to aid in consolidation efforts. We've got organ meats, lard, and chicken stock on the front porch while we work things through the freeze dryer to consolidate down to only 1 coffin sized deep freezer for the first time in years.
Lots of attention and concern about power outages of late, not just winter storm related, but also solar caused. A few weeks back I released this video detailing our key areas to consider and recommendations to build resilience. If power reliability is a concern for you right now: fill bath tubs so you can flush toilets, fill empty containers for extra drinking water and take up space in freezers to retain frozen temps longer (although outside is also an option this time of year), use heating options that don't rely upon the grid (wood is my favorite). If you lose power and don't have a heating backup, make sure you know how to drain your pipes.
Special early release to my nostr friends because I know y'all will like this one ๐Ÿ˜ Improved my vertical video editing finally. It's not my favorite having to keep things so short, missing out on deeper storylines and such. If it interests you I did previously post a message about the longer form video on this topic. #homesteading #grownostr
