I imagine that republicans own most of the guns. If Trump came out and said we need more gun control/regulation, republicans would be more likely to support it after this tragedy.

IF you MUST speculate, the angle which first came to my mind was that they want to shift outrage away from the train killing and away from black versus white and towards right versus left again.

Shifting the attention away from the train killing is certainly a plausible viewpoint.
But I am fairly certain that they will use this event as a way to regulate guns even more. Whether you believe that was the initial goal or not is impossible to prove. However, all of these shootings and killings over the years have inevitably led to more gun control.
