So it was trash since the beginning. Well then.... In terms of SimpleX, though, there are some issues with it, but I know it works extremely well if it's done right. I tend to use Matrix (though not Matrix[dot]org or others tied to it) if I wanted something similar to Discord, but de-centralized and federated. Otherwise, I use Nerimity, which is centralized.
Yeah it's always been bad spyrecord. I guess you haven't looked at simplex in awhile the some issues have been fixed every update is making improvements under the hood. Matrix I like for it's UX because i'm a sucker for that thread list & gallery view but it's encryption is very leaky it's got tons of metadata leaks & it's funny encrypt messages but not encrypt reactions. Then the homeserver admin tools anyone using them since it's a free public tool can see anyones ip address & see every single room they are in regardless what homeserver their on, how many files uploaded since acc creation & more. A little too personal exposing for my liking. What I like with simplex aside from how the encryption works is how you can change connection routing per person & change it when you need to during chat. Like you can hist your own smp I can host my own & when we dm each other we can set on that dm our connections route only to those 2 specific smps no proxy to any other. That's ensureing theirs no big brother above spying or determining whatever. Like I just want to chat with me & whoever not me whoever & shadow spy. Nermitly if I remember correctly the html web based chat with the cat icon originally nertivia but then the dev said hes scraping that because he wanted to build it all over again from scratch then asked the evil lazy devs at revolt to help him? If so yeah I know it pretty cool basic tabs in there is cute but still centralized & subject to their tos & pp.
Nerimity is made by Superkitten, the current solo dev in the project, with quite a few different contributors. I happened to be friends with one of the contributors, so I get it. It is self-hostable to a point (as one of my former acquaintances had tried), though there was some drama over the improper implementation. It is Electron based for the desktop app, and since I have the AppImage, it's Electron shenanigans (TS, JS and others accepted by Electron).
Not arguing because I know they've been trying, but I have yet to experience this for myself. If it gets to that point, I have zero issue opting out of Discord entirely... problem is, I use Discord for professional and learning aspects. I hate that so many companies use Discord for everything nowadays, but it's the unfortunate reality so hopefully companies will open alternatives of some sort.

White Noise, which is based on the MLS protocol, uses Nostr to transmit the data. It's entirely decentralised. It has good support for large groups This podcast episode is a nice intro: I'm very impressed. But it's still relatively new. The MLS protocol is not new, it seems to be well regarded. But the rolling out into the real world is still in the early stages
