The Emirates Health Services Institution has revealed a future plan to enhance the role and services of virtual medical consultations, also known as 'remote consultations'. The plan aims to add new specialties, such as chronic diseases, nutrition, and primary mental health, and increase the number of virtual doctors in high-demand areas. The institution has announced that it is working on integrating the service with smart government applications and enhancing integration with the national digital health records. Since the start of providing virtual consultations in 2024, a total of 37,684 patients have received services, with 18,842 patients receiving primary care services, 13,574 patients receiving family medicine services, 3,268 patients receiving urgent care services, and 2,000 patients receiving pre-marriage counseling services. The service has achieved a 35% increase in remote consultation requests compared to the same period in 2024, thanks to increased community awareness and the ease of booking appointments through the smart app. The institution has more than 60 doctors from various specialties, including family medicine, urgent care, and genetic counseling, who undergo training on virtual consultation protocols and data security. The current medical specialties available for virtual consultations include family medicine, smoking cessation, urgent care, genetic counseling, and pre-marriage counseling. The virtual consultation service is available from 8am to 8pm for family medicine, while urgent care is available 24/7, and pre-marriage counseling is available during official working hours from 8am to 3pm. The virtual consultation service was launched in 2024 as part of the institution's digital transformation plan, aiming to facilitate access to healthcare services without the need for physical presence. The service has achieved remarkable results, including a 95% patient satisfaction rate, a 40% reduction in unnecessary in-person visits, and improved communication with patients through virtual consultations, as well as contributing to improving digital healthcare service indicators. The virtual consultation and urgent care services are centrally managed and coordinated by the primary care department, while pre-marriage counseling services are shared with qualified medical teams in designated centers across the emirates to ensure geographic coverage and uniform service quality. Patients can book appointments through the Emirates Health Services Institution's app, which connects them with virtual doctors according to the required service type. The institution's director, Dr. Kareema, emphasized that the service targets all registered patients in primary care centers, including those seeking medical advice without needing to visit the center, as well as patients with chronic or recurring conditions that do not require in-person visits, and those preparing for marriage who can undergo electronic medical testing and genetic counseling. In cases where a doctor determines that a patient requires further care, they are electronically referred to the relevant specialist center, where an appointment is booked, and the patient's file is updated. The institution is committed to continuous training and development to ensure the quality and effectiveness of virtual consultations, which provide quick access to medical services, reduce pressure on healthcare centers, and improve the patient experience through convenience and flexibility, while supporting the institution's digital transformation and smart government initiatives.
