I'm curious though why Zap wouldn't use something like NANO (XNO) instead of BTC though. It's almost instant, and is inherently feeless. It does this without the need for a second layer, and uses ridiculously less power as well. It just seems like a no-brainer for everything this platform (as well as Zap) is about.

My take is that freedom of speech is the fundamental issue that Nostr addresses and Bitcoin is the distraction. Indeed, Nostr was always about censorship resistance and it's all the core protocol provides. New users find most posts about Bitcoin and leave if they're not as obsessed with it, because it distracts them from the benefits of Nostr.
I hear you but it depends on the region/person. Those without access to financial services need zaps to gain freedom. This applies to over 60% of the world. For advanced economies, we have our financial freedom so personal freedom is bigger.

The discrete, user signed packet of structured data is the innovation. The ability to reference other packets or authors by a globally unique ID is the innovation. Zaps are an application of the base innovation of Nostr. Otherwise simple lightning payments would have had the same emergent effects, but it didn't.
