They were likely threatened with reputation damage, eternal lawfare and worse unless they made a plea deal. This is how the system works to avoid establishing legal precedents that would be inconvenient to itself.

Still, if it's only the central hosted (default) whirlpool instance they provided that hurt them - then that's not the worst case scenario either - decentralize & forgo that extra greedification / simplification.
