The Authority Complex

Blindly taking advice from others without self trust

Something that has really been on my mind much lately is how most people seem to blindly want to trust people or entities that are seen as "authorities" on it.

For example, a doctor tells you that you need a specific drug or procedure, because he is seen as an "expert" many will just go along with it blindly without putting any real thought into it.

The drug that the doctor told you to take could be good, but could also be very harmful in some cases.

And then you can go deeper, and ask "Well, who trained the doctor?" What made him give the prescription? Was it the school he graduated from? Was it the company who makes the product?

Another example would be you go to college, and the professor teaches you based on a set of guidelines put fourth by even higher "authorities" in the field.

The point I'm trying to make isn't that we shouldn't or can't trust others, or that authorities on things can't help us, but they do a lot of harm too.

People are too quick to trust, and too trusting to verify for themselves. This mentality can be extremely dangerous in many situations.

Maybe it's time we stop believing the guy with a badge or a degree because they are "certified" and start to think for ourselves more.
