Buying gifts for every single person gets expensive fast. And more importantly, it pulls the focus away from what the holidays are really about.
Time together. Laughter. Being present.
So years ago, our family started a tradition that changed everything.
It is fun. It is chaotic. It is full of laughs. And no one goes broke doing it.
Here is how it works:
Everyone who wants to participate brings one wrapped gift. You set a spending limit in advance. For example, $50 max.
All gifts go into the center of the room on a table or on the floor.
Then the host writes numbers on separate slips of paper from 1 to the total number of players. If there are 20 people, you write 1 through 20. Every number is crumbled so no one can see it. The host may also participate.
The slips go into a hat or bowl and everyone pulls one number at random. You keep your number secret.
The host then calls numbers in order.
Number 1 goes first. They pick any gift from the center, unwrap it, and must keep it. No swaps yet.
Number 2 goes next. They pick any unopened gift, unwrap it, and may either keep it or swap with Number 1.
Number 3 goes next. Same rules. Pick a new gift, unwrap it, and they can keep it or swap with anyone who already went.
This continues all the way through the last number.
Every time your turn is complete, you crumble your number and put it back in the hat, and don’t forget the number you had.
Once the final person goes, all numbers are mixed again.
The host pulls one final random number and that person gets the last power move. They can keep their gift or swap with anyone in the room.
𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: There will be loud laughing, dramatic trades, playful chaos, and people campaigning for their gifts. It gets rowdy in the best way.
And somehow, every year, no one ever forgets that night🥰
