I haven’t made a firm decision yet, but if my earnings on Medium drop below $50/month, it might be time to pull the plug. Shame. I don’t understand their business model anymore. There’s no reason to write there versus your own blog. I do not like the substack model, but if I was going to do that, why give them any money? I can set up my own paywall. I hate that video is the driver now. I’d so much rather read than watch.
Saw a video today. Old white guy. “I learned something today. You never really know who people are. There’s this dentist that got busted for drug dealing the other day. He lives just down the road. I’ve been going to this guy for like 12 years, and I never would have guessed he was a dentist.”
There is nothing I enjoy more than being prepared for the task at hand, whether that’s having the perfect tool for the job, or the right outfit for the occasion. I don’t know precisely what that is, but order and control must have something to do with it. It’s a good feeling.
The thing that sucks about most food writing these days, such as the type of essays you might find in annual best-of anthologies, is that everything seems to have an agenda that is either political, sociological, or otherwise considered newsworthy. I don’t need another depressing treatise on the socioeconomics of a popular dish or the political ramifications of an entire cuisine.
