How plastic is harming Sri Lankan elephants. Sri Lanka's elephants are unknowingly consuming plastic waste, potentially cutting their life spans in half. Lakshitha Karunarathna's striking image, Toxic Tip shines a light on this issue. Lakshitha reveals that "the elephants have become addicted to the sweet and salty flavours of the food that's been dumped, but they're also ingesting plastic that's left with the food waste #photography #elephants image

The Romans created one of the earliest known examples of nanotechnology nearly 1600 years before NASA. This is the Lycurgus Cup. When lit from the front, it appears jade green. But place a light inside, and it glows a fiery red. The secret? The glass contains tiny gold and silver particles around 50 nanometers in diameter--less than one-thousandth the size of a grain of salt. It wasn't magic. It was remarkably advanced glass chemistry whose exact recipe has been lost to time. @archaeologyart image

AshmoleanAdvent Day 8: Black Bear Cub. Painted by Japanese artist Mori Shūhō, this small bear looks directly out at the viewer while it sits uneasily on a ledge amid the snowflakes. Shūhō was a member of the Mori School of artists who specialised in lifelike depictions of animals. He was the elder brother of Sosen (1747–1821), the famous painter of monkeys. Shūhō was a respected and prolific artist in his hometown of Osaka. 🐻 EA1964.95.F @ashmoleanmuseum #globalmuseum image
When Vincent van Gogh moved to Paris in 1886, he was suddenly exposed to Impressionism's colors, which radically changed his palette. So, to experiment cheaply with colour harmonies before trying on canvas, he used small balls of coloured wool. He would arrange them in different combinations to see how hues interacted. The balls of wool were kept in this red cardboard box, which is preserved in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. @xmuse_ #globalmuseum #art image
