This is, technically, a "good film" in terms of production, acting, and everything.
I just... fucking hated where it went.
That's always the potential twist in a story like this "what if he was right?!", yet I really hoped it wasn't that this time.
I thought maybe she was just as fucking unhinged, in a way, as her captor, in the end. That explained why the hell she didn't just leave when he dumped antifreeze into his mother. Like, she was doing a power trip of her own over this guy. And that'd be the story: they'd both be really awful assholes, and probably both end up dead.
Having his character be 'right' is usually the twist I dig, but not in this case...
Reminds me of 'Red State' where it's obvious these people are fucking crazy, but then you get a taste of "what if they're right", and the Rapture horns start blaring... but at least THAT finale was actually satisfying.
But this film's conclusion left me cold. It was just... goofy.
That said, I can totally see and understand someone loving this, or enjoying it. It looks great, and the score is a real trip. Hell, I was WITH it for most of the film (even when it dragged)... I mean, Emma Stone can do no wrong in my eyes, but a script certainly can -- this just didn't do it for me.
2/5
