Earth Is Getting Darker Here's the latest "must read" by James Hansen. Key takeaways: Earth's albedo (reflectivity) has declined over the past 25 years, according to precise satellite data. This decline is primarily attributed to reduced reflection of sunlight by clouds. While reduced human-made aerosols contribute to some cloud change, most of it is due to cloud feedback related to global warming. The observed albedo change indicates that clouds provide a large, amplifying climate feedback. This large cloud feedback supports the conclusion of high climate sensitivity. I guess this gives (again) a nice example how a various effects of a collapse could work out. Electricity gone also means: * no way to fill up your car * in some places water supply stopped (pumps!) * no way to contact a doctor, fire fighter or other emergency service * food spoils because freezers thaw * huge congestion because problems with all type of traffic. * ATM don't work * mobile phones can't be used and only last as long as their batteries * many shops can't sell, because their cash registers don't work. * etc. etc. In short mayhem all over the place. Luckily I'm on a small solar system and amazingly most of the day internet worked. Only an outage from 14:30 to around 18:00 Unfortunately my website is down, although the (solar powered) server didn't give a budge. BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — A blackout brought much of Spain and Portugal to a standstill Monday, halting subway and railway trains, cutting phone service and shutting down traffic lights and ATMs for millions of people across the Iberian Peninsula. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that a problem in the European grid that he described as a “strong oscillation” was behind the outage, but that the cause was still being determined. The Spanish leader asked the public to refrain from speculation and said no theory about the cause of the outage had been discarded. Spanish power distributor Red Eléctrica said that restoring power fully to the country and neighboring Portugal could take 6-10 hours. By mid-afternoon, voltage was progressively being restored in the north, south and west of the peninsula, the company said. The company declined to speculate on the causes of the huge blackout. Sánchez thanked the governments of France and Morocco, where energy was being pulled from to restore power to north and southern Spain. The Portuguese National Cybersecurity Center issued a statement saying there was no sign the outage was due to a cyberattack. #BlackOut #IberianPeninsula #Power #outage #electricity #Energy #collapse #CrashCourse
When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical And all the birds in the trees, well they′d be singing so happily Oh joyfully, oh playfully watching me But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible Logical, oh responsible, practical And then they showed me a world where I could be so dependable Oh clinical, oh intellectual, cynical There are times when all the world's asleep The questions run too deep For such a simple man Won′t you please, please tell me what we've learned I know it sounds absurd Please tell me who I am I said, watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical A liberal, oh fanatical, criminal Won′t you sign up your name, we′d like to feel you're acceptable Respectable, oh presentable, a vegetable! Oh take it, take it, take it, yeah But at night, when all the world′s asleep The questions run so deep For such a simple man Won't you please (Oh won′t you tell me) Please tell me what we've learned (Can you hear me) I know it sounds absurd (Oh won′t you help me) Please tell me who I am Who I am Who I am Who I am 'Cause I was feeling so logical D-d-d-d-d-d-digital One, two, three, five Oh, oh, oh, oh yeah Ooh it's getting unbelievable, yeah #SundaySong #Supertramp #Lyrics #Logical #Music #CrashCourse
How would I survive the apocalypse? By stocking up on the key item most preppers forget. Russia is once again a threat to Europe and the US can’t be relied upon to save us. In the French government booklet there will, reportedly, be emergency numbers, radio channels and encouragement, should the need arise, to get involved in civil defence-type efforts including volunteer firefighting. This assumes that some semblance of order survives. My nearest London tube station is one of the city’s deepest, but I’ve seen enough apocalypse shows to know that hiding underground is not the answer; you have either to head north, to a national park where you can outrun the cannibals and hunt game, or barricade yourself in your apartment for three months until the initial anarchy has burned itself out and you can go on a scavenging run to the shops. And, of course, you must be prepared. After the blackout, I bought a torch so powerful it could double as Mace if you could get an aggressor to look straight into it, and I’m definitely thinking about finding the cable to charge it. I’m also starting to stock up, although it strikes me that the French have left out one important piece of advice from their booklet. A lot of people in New York have generational trauma from relatives who did, indeed, flee Europe decades ago, and the ones I know would point out that missing from the French guidelines is alcohol. This isn’t a joke. The shrewd prepper understands that if things collapse and money becomes useless, the value of alcohol – for anaesthetic, sterilisation, sedation – rises to the very top of the new currency system. You can pack your tiny bottles of water and buy your tins, but my advice to you, if prepping, is to stop off at the off-licence and grab three bottles of premium whisky and a bottle of Tanqueray – which you are absolutely not allowed to touch until the bombs start falling. #collapse #prepper #prepping #alcohol #CrashCourse
