trying to steelman the tiktok ban: if US intelligence could prove it was being used as a propaganda tool and a way to increase mental instability, is it the role of government to protect its people beyond physical borders? seems more of their energy could be put towards the physical health of its citizens if that were the case.

More of their energy should be put towards (improved, adaptive, modern) education as TikTok is not the real threat… but the usage & influence that it can generate is the new wider type of threat new generations should learn to handle.
…Unless that’s what they’re trying to do themselves, but with their own tools… as in China?
Wouldn't the simplest solution just have been to ban it from app stores? DONE.
That's kinda why I don't believe it's for whatever reason they say. You do that and it would naturally die off.
This assumes they care about their citizens 😂
US intelligence agencies already said that the threats they identified with regard to TikTok were hypothetical. Of course, even hypothetical threats are good enough for politicians who already want to ban something. Either way, I have zero faith in the ability of our current elected officials to accurately identify propaganda, especially given that a concerning number of them seem to think the ongoing Donghua Jinlong joke is evidence of Chinese brainwashing.
