Network effects. Same reason people (including me FWIW) tolerate bad governance in Blue cities... Because that's where economic and cultural activity is concentrated.
As for the two-party system, it's a lot of "tribalism." We're social animals, and people in general don't want to stray too far from the "Overton window" of their friends and family.
