I used to live on a sailboat for 3 years- itβs amazing!
I lived on a homemade sailboat for 5 summers. My wife and I loved it! but it's probably not for everyone. That said, if your just living in a marina it's not much different than living in a small apartment.
interesting, do you remember what the costs for upkeep were? was it steel or wood? was it in sea or sweet water?
A lot of this depends on what you're doing. I was living on a 1970's fiberglass sailboat in saltwater. Upkeep is pretty low from a living aboard perspective. You need to have the boat hauled out and have the bottom painted about every 2 years + some other small things relating to the motor.
But generally fiberglass boats are pretty bulletproof.
Wood needs more care and I wouldn't want a steel baot for a number of reasons(maybe aluminum).
Are you interested in a sailboat or just a liveaboard boat?
I live on a boat! Have been on various sizes for 5 years.
The pros:
It forces you to live minimalist.
Sailing with friends!
Sailing far places.
Feeling self sufficient and prepared.
Cheaper than a house, if it's one or the other.
The cons:
Can be expensive if you're not handy.
If you ARE handy, they require a lot of work, especially in the beginning if you're buying used. (You should definitely buy used).
Depending on where you're docked it can be hard to sleep.
Little things like filling your water tank, getting a good shower, and doing your laundry are more cumbersome.
There's kind of a steep learning curve if you're new to boats, but remember!: When it comes to boats, it's almost a certainty that someone dumber than you has figured out how to do it.
I like it. I have no intention of buying a house anytime soon. Live free.
Oh PS: A great way to learn is go down to your local yacht club and ask to join the "beer can" races. You'll get to see a lot of different boats and talk to their owners about what they like/dislike about them. Bring beer.
I love this
well said Garrett.
I lived on the boat full-time for 6 years. I ended up sailing north and eventually decided to live on land again. While I still spend time with the boat doing boaty things (just not full time living there).
If it's a dream of yours like it was mine, I can recommend following it π³
Yes π spent the majority of the last 40 years living and working on boats around the world. Presently sailing up Australiaβs east coast.
Running a node and just got a bitaxe to mine using our excess power. Highly recommend it as itβs one of the last places you can live self sovereign producing your own electricity and water.
