The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, announces that social media will be banned for minors under 16 years old:
"Starting next week, my government will implement the following actions:
Firstly, we will amend the law in Spain to hold the executives of platforms legally accountable for many of the infringements that occur on their sites.
Secondly, we will turn algorithmic manipulation and the amplification of illegal content into a new criminal offence.
Thirdly, we will implement a system for monitoring hate and polarisation to track, quantify and expose how digital platforms fuel division and amplify hate.
Fourthly, Spain will prohibit access to social media for those under 16 years of age. Platforms will be required to implement effective age verification systems: not just checkboxes, but real barriers that actually work.
Fifth and lastly, my government will work with our public prosecutor to investigate and prosecute the infringement committed by Grok, TikTok and Instagram."
