Moving to the Decentralized Fediverse After 9 Years of Travel

After nearly nine years of travel, I’ve moved my content away from Facebook and into decentralized networks like the Fediverse and Nostr. I now share travel stories, photos, and exclusive follower-only updates across Mastodon, Misskey, Pixelfed, and my Hive blog, focusing on privacy, openness, and cross-platform connection. The future, for me, is decentralized.

After traveling for almost 9 years, I decided to move my content to decentralized platforms. I want to share my journey and experiences in a lighter, more open way β€” away from Facebook and the heavy Meta ecosystem.

My Accounts in the Decentralized World

  • Mastodon: @rubenstorm@defcon.social β€” I post travel stories, images, and updates like when I pass borders or arrive at airports. Most of this content is followers-only, so subscribers see exclusive content.

  • Misskey: @rubenstorm@sakurajima.social β€” Here I post more images per post. No location is shared on this account.

  • Pixelfed: @rubenstorm@pixelfed.one β€” If you just want photos and short stories from my travels, Pixelfed is the place to follow. No blog links, no location, just images and stories.

  • Nostr: rubenstorm@nostr.lima.zone β€” Daily posts, updates, and connections in a fully decentralized environment.

  • Mastodon.world: @rubenstorm@mastodon.world β€” For daily posts and connecting in the Fediverse, keeping in touch with the fediworld.

I also link my blog posts from Hive: hive.blog/@rubenstorm on both Mastodon and Misskey accounts.

Why Decentralized?

Most of my content β€” stories, photos, and updates β€” is for followers only πŸ‘οΈ. Exclusive content is available for subscribers. This approach gives me more control, privacy, and freedom, away from the constraints of centralized platforms.

I used the default Mastodon client for a while, which is very nice. My favorite client is Tusky for its minimalistic design, and for image posting and Misskey servers I use Fedilab. Fedilab is powerful, and Tusky keeps things simple.

It doesn’t matter where you register β€” the Fediverse is cross-platform and cross-server compatible, so you can follow me regardless of which server you choose.

The Future is Decentralized

Meta’s business is not used much anymore in my workflow. The future is decentralized β€” Nostr and the Fediverse.
