Look, I'm going to be completely honest. Some aspects of today's events, and some elements leading up to it, have given me bad vibes. I'm not trying to assasinate Evan's character or make him look like a bad person, but I want to characterize some of the dynamic problems I'm seeing from coopting "The Social Web" as a term, and equating it, #Fediverse, and #ActivityPub as all one-and-the-same. I might get flamed for sharing this, but I have to be honest about what I really think, and why I have some problems stomaching how things are happening. https://deadsuperhero.com/2024/09/swf-icky-feeling/
Sometimes, I find myself feeling burnt out about the #Fediverse. There's a huge amount of promise, but lots of turmoil, struggle, and infighting. Sometimes, I worry about how sustainable this thing is.
I am now the proud owner of fedizen.net. Fedizen is intended to launch as We Distribute Media's second major initiative, in addition to a news publication. The goal is to create a directory of businesses, tools, and services within the #Fediverse. There are a lot of small businesses within the space, from hosting providers and consultants to artists/designers taking commissions. There's still a lot to figure out. If you would like to have your business listed in the directory prior to launch, please reach out!
This is just a gentle reminder: we are testing out an Events system to promote events across the Social Web. This includes the #Fediverse, #Bluesky, and #Nostr. It's not quite ready for prime-time yet, but we are looking for everything from game jams to talks to conferences and beyond. If you have anything that you would like to be added, please reach out. There's some upstream development in the WordPress ActivityPub space that will make it possible for our events calendar to federate with platforms like Mobilizon and Gancio. It's not ready yet, but our hope is to make events across the network easier to discover in the short term. You can check out the list here: https://wedistribute.org/events/
Completing a great game has all the same vibes as finishing a great book. I'm deeply satisfied, but a little depressed that I've reached the end of Fallout London. Despite the bugs and crashes, and some amateur elements, it's a wonderful game.
Some days, I wonder about whether what I'm doing actually matters in the grand scheme of things. My spirit is tired, and I feel small. It's been nice, building this thing and reporting on an evolving space. Someday, someone actually competent might come along and blow us out of the water. Or, maybe the world will pivot to focus on something else. I've written nearly 60 articles this year so far, and it just feels like I'm flicking tiny pebbles in a small pond.
God damn, @npub1kqca...7wgd, this track absolutely slaps! Just heard this on @radio free fedi, an absolute groove!
This came up in our chatroom earlier, and it's...not a good look. Some of the responses from #Mastodon users here are deeply problematic. There are a lot of reasons why a news organization might want to take a break from a given social network. One possibility that I saw was that maybe they weren't getting good metrics for the amount of work that was getting put in. They might have had a hard time getting their articles out to the people most interested in reading them. I don't know the reasons for sure, but maybe it wasn't a good match for what they're trying to do. View quoted note →
