One of the last female jesters in history was a fervent Catholic, Mathurine the Fool. She was said to employ her comedic skills as a clown to convert Huguenots back to Catholicism.
Mathurine is mentioned along with other 16th century jesters by a contemporary author who joked that these jesters were Catholic only because they knew that Protestant Reformers would abolish the jester-profession if they came to power.
