I just learned from @npub1x4fn...d45t about how Leibniz discussed calculus while corresponding with his benefactor. She shared that in a letter in 1673, he wrote that his machine was meant to substitute human calculus/thinking "in accounting, measurement, fortification, shipping, indeed all of mathematics & mechanics, as well as commerce & finance, reducing human labor by half & saving on the unnecessary number of people required for these tasks & on many wages." Talk about how funding shapes science.
#FediBlock @CensorsAreCultists@mastodon.cloud. Explicitly racist calling us the N word, that we belong in the zoo etc.
When it’s the likes of Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair doing serious journalism on Silicon Valley because other so-called serious news outlets are doing more press-releases-as-journalism to maintain their access….Via @npub1x4fn...d45t
Resurfacing this op-ed since neither DODGE nor AI Hype seem to be on the decline. In this Op-ed for Scientific American, Asmelash Teka Hadgu and I discuss one of the many reasons the idea of replacing US federal workers with so-called generative AI systems should terrify us. 🧵
When @npub1h7z6...adur first shared this I thought that it was surely satire, like the fake RocketAI startup party at NeurIPS 2016. I'm still not sure but I recognize some of the names listed as organizers. This can't be real right? "The 1st open conference where AI serves as both primary authors and reviewers of research papers"
Reminder of what your favorite now so-called tech critic who was in the "singularity summit" mix for years, and was defending his advisor, race scientist Steven Pinker, was saying to me when I raised these issues. First, he said I "can't call everything I disagree with eugenics." Then, he attacked me, unsummoned, when I came to the defense of my colleague at UCLA who were being smeared by Judea Pearl for being against genocide. image
Another year, another amazing week at JamCoders. In the photo, the head TA, Zaria Chen Shui, and I were trying to make a heart but I was additionally trying (and failing) to make a JC sign with my fingers 😂 Every time someone talks about "AI" in K-12 education, I think about what it takes to run programs like AddisCoder and JamCoders. image
Our benevolent billionaires: "The investor described a “counterattack” against universities in his messages and called for the National Science Foundation, a federal research funding agency, to receive “the bureaucratic death penalty.”
"Surveillance Watch is one intervention in this landscape, an attempt to shift the power back to those being watched. It is a community‑driven project that deploys interactive maps and databases to reveal the web of surveillance companies, their funders, subsidiaries, affiliations, and global operations in an effort to make opaque surveillance networks transparent. However, we need more." https://truthout.org/articles/us-campuses-have-become-the-newest-laboratories-for-surveillance-technology/
As we knew it was going to happen, like clockwork, they're now saying they're going to prioritize denaturalizing citizens. We knew that was what they were working towards and that they are not going to stop there. Being quiet and seeing how far they will go is not an option. https://thehill.com/policy/national-security/5379452-doj-memo-denaturalized-us-citizens-trump-immigration/
