I know I'm late to the party to be finishing @npub1dqh4...eq5y's Empire of AI Now. But now that I've finished the book, I can tell you that it is nothing short of a masterpiece. It needs to be required reading for everyone in the tech industry, or anyone who wants to be in the tech industry. The book also articulates why I've had such an aversion to OpenAI since its inception in 2015, more so than any other tech company.

I'm reading all this (unpleasant) back and forth I had from back in 2020 now that I'm writing this book, and this comment from the VP who ordered us to retract our Stochastic Parrot's paper (via a "privileged and confidential letter to HR without his name on it) didn't age so well did it? "Section 6 makes good points but all of google’s uses have been engineered to avoid these harms."
When I think back on the amount of faith I must have had in my colleagues and hire ups who would have lunch with me and send me Christmas cards one day &fire me the next... About 5 years ago, on Jun 24, 2020, we convinced Google research to give us the floor at the research all hands meeting. There, the handful of Black people involved in research, ranging from research scientists to recruiters, spoke about their experiences at the company. We were emotional and we really left it all out there.
"The NBER paper comes on the heels of other indications suggesting that AI’s potential, while tremendous, has been vastly overstated in the media and the market." But they're doing the exact overstatement here with the phrase "while tremendous."
