What is WRONG with the weather in the Netherlands today?!? The sky is the wrong colour, i.e. not slate gray and dripping wet, and there's this bright glowing *thing* in it that burns! Has this ICE train taken a wrong turning and ended up in Algeria by mistake? (Note for US folks: ICE in this case is short for Inter City Express—a German high speed train mostly notable this decade for always being late.)

Little-known fact: if you base a character on two real people—taking some traits from each—they rapidly become almost impossible for the subjects (or anybody else) to recognize. So unless you specifically want to skewer an enemy, or have permission to paint a portrait of a friend, just use that one neat trick and you'll be safe! And if that doesn't suffice, there's always the Small Penis rule.

#WritersCoffeeClub 9 Dec. Do you reuse certain words as refrain or motif, or avoid repetition altogether? I have no idea! At this point (30-some books into a career) that falls under basic mechanics—"don't repeat unusual words in proximity without intent". Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't because never mind not repeating words, these days I find myself trying not to accidentally repeat *novels*.
Read this bearing in mind that CNN has totally drink a lethal dose of AI bubble Kool-Aid.
