Who are the 100 Most Influential Contemporary (in other words, LIVING) Urbanists in the World? According to @planetizen, these 100 folks are, after re-running the numbers of their recent “past & present” Top 100 results. So I went from 19th to 8th.
Very clever — the German ad says "protect wildlife before it's too late." HT WWF Germany image
Hey, remember when car and oil companies successfully lobbied governments to create car dependent cities and suburbs, and once we became almost completely car dependent, WE became the loudest, angriest champions of unhindered road space for cars only, cheap gas, and free parking? #cars #cities #suburbs #CarDependency image
It’s not just about taking away car space. It’s WHAT you replace that car space WITH. Pic via @LolitaBoston image
A lot of people have a REALLY strange definition of “freedom.” #CarDependency image
This is important. “Reconsider this word ‘balance.’ Let’s say, for argument’s sake, your end goal is balance. Picture a 100-yard dash where you’ve given the car a 90-yard head start. That’s kind of where you are. Even if your goal is an outcome of balance, by definition you have to prioritize the other modes even to just catch up.” Prioritize walking, biking & transit.
“Tech billionaires don’t have a great track record when it comes to fixing our transportation system—but we keep giving them 2nd chances. For 15 years, we’ve waited for Silicon Valley to solve the problems on our roads and it’s continually failed to deliver. Instead, tech companies have kept us trapped in our cars by distracting us from investments in improved transit & other transport options.” @npub10jk3...dpae in @npub15dkg...dh7g
NEW: There’s PLENTY to debate in this final voting result of Planetizen’s “Most Influential Urbanists, Past & Present,” (including my own #19 ranking ahead of many great urbanists who inspired ME). Still, it’s an honour to be included, and I thank ALL who voted for me and everyone else, & congratulate my many friends & heroes who were recognized! #cities #urbanism #CityPlanning image
Watching the news tonight, 2 more mass shootings in the United States being reported on. 338 mass shootings in the US already this year, about half way in. 21,497 deaths from gun violence, or 115 average per day in 2023 already, according to @CTVNews. That is beyond insane. #guns #GunControl #GunReform
Another reminder that urban density & lush street trees creating a “Kissing Canopy” over the sidewalk and street are completely compatible. It’s actually PART of #DensityDoneWell. You just have to make it a actual design priority. As this very dense block in my downtown #Vancouver neighbourhood illustrates. #trees #StreetTrees #downtown #cities
